Re-opening 2021

Location

The Main Square

ACMI is Melbourne’s definitive museum of screen culture, and one of the jewels in Fed Square’s crown. Join us and explore the universe of film, TV, videogames and art.

ACMI celebrates the wonder and power of the world’s most democratic artform – fostering the next generation of makers, players and watchers.

Their vibrant calendar of exhibitions, screenings, commissions, festivals, and industry and education programs explores the stories, technologies and artists that create our shared screen culture.

Explore ACMI’s universe before they reopen their doors in 2021.

In 2019 ACMI embarked on a $40million redevelopment project to re-imagine the museum and create a more open and welcoming environment, enhance their learning spaces and showcase new innovations in moving image technology.

In October 2020, after months of extensive renovations, ACMI have launched a new brand identity along with a digital museum offer including:

  • An online experience of their centrepiece exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image. The moving image is everywhere. From our TVs and consoles to cinemas and smartphones, it transports us to new worlds and into the past while reflecting our hopes, fears and dreams.
  • A vast online suite of Collections & Preservation material that brings together a fascinating 75-year moving image legacy that encompasses Victoria, Australia, and the world, presenting stories and objects in unique ways, spanning the conventions of traditional museums and reflecting the evolution of the moving image today.
  • Coming soon – two new streaming platforms, Cinema 3 – a video-on-demand service offering a unique selection of cinema classics, revivals and new releases from homegrown and global talents; and Gallery 5 – a dedicated stream of online-only artwork and performances in this new digital exhibition space.
