Busking at Fed Square

Fed Square is Melbourne’s civic, cultural, and community heart — a place where art, creativity, and connection come to life every day.

As the gateway to the city’s arts precinct, we proudly welcome street performers who bring colour and energy to the Square.

If you’d like to perform at Fed Square, here’s what you’ll need:

You can find more information about City of Melbourne busking permits here: Busking permits | City of Melbourne

Your Fed Square Busking Permit will be reviewed based on the type of activity and how it aligns with our safety, event and operational requirements. Before applying, it may be helpful to check the Fed Square calendar of events to see when and where performances can best complement other onsite activities.

Fed Square reserves the right to adjust, relocate or cancel performances at any time to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the site.

You can view our busking locations map here.

To help ensure a great experience for everyone – performers, visitors and event partners – please follow these simple guidelines:

  • Keep performances respectful of other activities and events taking place.
  • Ensure your content, language and imagery are suitable for a family-friendly public space.
  • Use only portable, handheld props or instruments — permanent or heavy infrastructure (like banners, generators, vehicles or furniture) can’t be brought onsite.
  • Keep pathways clear for pedestrian movement and ensure your setup doesn’t block entryways or neighbouring businesses.
  • Take care of the space — please leave your area clean and as you found it.
  • Any signage, logos or promotional material mentioning Fed Square must be approved before use.
  • Be considerate with sound levels. Amplification is welcome within designated hours:
    • 9am–10pm (Sun–Thu)
    • 9am–11pm (Fri–Sat and public holiday)
  • If asked by a Fed Square representative, please follow any instructions to relocate or pause your performance.

Performances take place at your own risk and are not considered formal events.
