Blue Flame Agave is a monocarpic species, meaning it will bloom and produce seeds only once before dying (mono = single, karpos = fruit). The plant will one day redirect all its energy and resources toward seed production, leaving nothing in the tank and ultimately causing its death. This doesn’t necessarily mean the agave will have a short life – it may live for many years before producing flowers, depending on multiple factors including growing conditions.
The curved foliage of this evergreen succulent is said to resemble a blue flame when in movement. The Blue Flame Agave’s blue-green leaves have a finely serrated edge, and grow in elegant, open rosettes.
This perennial’s unique shape and colour makes it popular with home gardeners, who should keep it in well-drained soil with full or partial sun. Blue Flame Agave is low maintenance and drought-tolerant – like all succulents, it stores water and should not be watered excessively.
A death bloom is part of the natural growth cycle, and if the time comes for our Blue Flame Agave, its flowers will attract pollinators, and the succulent will hopefully provide offsets for future plants.

Parry’s Agave (𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺𝘪) is slow-growing but worth the wait!
Along with Blue Flame Agave, this is one of the Test Garden’s monocarpic species, meaning it will bloom and produce seeds only once before dying (𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘰 = single, 𝘬𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴 = fruit). This plant can take 10 or 20 years to produce a flower, but when it does – it’ll be spectacular! Parry’s Agave sprout dense clusters of yellow flowers, tinged red or pink, on a huge tree-like stem that can grow to 5 metres tall.
Before it blooms, however, gardeners can enjoy this plant’s attractive blue-grey leaves, tipped with a distinctive spine. Parry’s Agave is happiest in well-drained soil in full sun, and has proved quite hardy throughout Melbourne’s winter.
This compact succulent is one of dozens of plant species named after nineteenth century botanist Charles C. Parry. It is native to Arizona, Texas and Mexico, where it can be found in grasslands, desert scrub and oak woodlands. This species has traditionally been used extensively by Native American tribes for food, fibre, medicine and drink.

This pretty perennial is a favourite for gardeners – the sweet nectar in each floret attracts bees and butterflies, while the onion-y smell and taste in its stems can deter pests from nibbling on your plants.
Rosy-purple spherical flower heads appear on strong stems in late spring and summer, floating above the ground layer in the Test Garden.
Millenium Ornamental Onion belongs to the 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘮 (Latin for ‘garlic’) genus, one of the largest plant genera in the world. Although this species is purely ornamental, many of its relatives are grown for culinary purposes, such as onions, shallots, garlic, chives and wild garlic.
Millenium Ornamental Onion is an easy and quick growing plant, which requires little maintenance. Grow it in well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, and propagate by division.

The humble Spider Aloe (𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴) is a hardy, adaptable hero both in the garden and indoors.
Spider Aloe is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa, where it can be found on stony, arid terrain. A member of the Asphodelaceae, its botanic name &#8216;𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴&#8217; (meaning small, or humble) refers to its growth habit, while the common name is thought to be a reference to its long spindly leaves resembling spider legs.
This succulent forms low to the ground clusters of rosettes of spiky blue-green leaves. Once mature, Spider Aloe will flower from late winter to spring, producing spikes of red-orange flowers that may seem disproportionately large to the rest of the plant.
Spider Aloe is a popular indoor plant as it can handle periods of drought &#8211; it will forgive you if you forget to water it! Whether you grow it in a pot or in your garden, ensure the soil drains well.

Spider Aloe

The foliage of this succulent forms a natural spiral – a living example of the Fibonacci sequence. The Spiral Aloe’s leaves grow in a mathematically precise arrangement that’s as functional as it is beautiful, helping maximise sun exposure and space efficiency for this perennial. Some researchers believe our brains are wired to respond to patterns like these!
Known by its common name Spiral Aloe, and botanic name polyphylla (&#8216;many leaves&#8217; in Greek), it is also referred to as the &#8220;Gem of the Drakensberg&#8221; as it is endemic to a well-known section of the Great Escarpment in Africa.
Compact and clump-forming, this stemless aloe grows to 0.5m tall and 1m wide. It produces grey-green leaves with a brown spine at the tip and remarkably, it rarely flowers. If it does, tubular red-pink blooms will appear in spring.
Spiral Aloe is the national flower of Lesotho, where it grows in rocky crevices and well-drained scree slopes on mountains between 2000m – 2500m altitude. Home gardeners will find it grows best in full sun or partial shade with sandy, free-draining soil. While it is low maintenance once established, the Spiral Aloe can be difficult to cultivate outside its native range.

Little Bluestem (𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘯 ‘Blaze’) provides us with lovely autumn colours in the Test Garden.
This species of grass is from North America and rewards gardeners with different colours throughout the year. Little Bluestem is blue in spring, turns grey green in summer, and becomes a beautiful red-purple hue for autumn and winter.
The fluffy seed heads are ornamental but also provide a food source for sparrows and finches in North America. We are keeping an eye on the 𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘴 in the Test Garden to see if any local species come looking for a snack.
Little Bluestem is relatively easy to care for as it’s drought tolerant – just don&#8217;t over-water it!

Landscape Scarlet Kangaroo Paw (𝘈𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘰𝘻𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴 &#8216;Landscape Scarlet&#8217;) is a vivid splash of colour in the garden.
Kangaroo Paw occurs naturally only in the southwest of Western Australia, where it is the state’s floral emblem. The species growing in the Test Garden is one of many colourful cultivars that have been specially bred for home gardens.
Kangaroo Paws are one of the best native plants for attracting nectar-feeding birds such as honeyeaters, spinebills and wattlebirds. When a bird lands on one of the tall stalks to feed from the nectar, thin anthers cover the animal with pollen, enabling it to spread.
Got too many in the garden? Kangaroo Paw are also a beautiful cut flower and could be a great centrepiece for a festive feast.

Curlicue Sage (𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘢 ‘Sea Foam’) is a hot weather hero.
This is a popular plant for dry, sunny conditions. Curlicue Sage is a great plant to introduce texture and foliage to the garden, and thrives in the Test Garden in hot summer weather. It&#8217;s a shrubby, semi-deciduous perennial and is very aromatic and soft to touch.
Despite its common name, it belongs to the Asteraceae family, not the Mint family with other sage plants. Other species of artemesia include the kitchen herb tarragon, and Artemisia absinthium, used to make absinthe!

Curlicue Sage

Pale Vanilla Lily (𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮) is a fragrant native plant whose common name tells you everything – vanilla-perfumed flowers that smell even sweeter on warm days.
This tufted, grassy herb from the Asparagaceae family is found in open eucalypt forest, woodland, and grasslands across New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. From spring through summer, delicate blooms appear with six white-lilac petals, purple anthers, and distinctive hairy white filaments in shades of pale pink, mauve or white.
Each Pale Vanilla Lily plant produces approximately 10 nutrient-rich tubers the size of a small carrot that can be eaten raw or roasted. First Peoples have cultivated this plant for generations – see Zena Cumpston’s ‘Indigenous Plant Use’ for more information.
The strappy silver-green leaves may die back after flowering, but the tuber will be dormant underground – make a note of its location lest you accidentally discard it when weeding!
Although it appears delicate, Pale Vanilla Lily is tough and low maintenance. It likes both sun and shade and can tolerate drought and frost. Plant it in your garden to attract native bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators.

Follow your nose to find Chocolate Lily (Arthropodium strictum) in the Test Garden.
The beautiful purple flowers of this native lily begin to appear in spring. They are famed for their chocolate scent and are found throughout south-eastern Australia.
Chocolate Lily holds significance for First Peoples, who have been cultivating it as bush food for generations, roasting the white root tubers for eating (see ‘Indigenous Plant Use’ by Zena Cumpston for more information).
This plant is easy to grow and to propagate. It likes full sun or part shade – just ensure you leave enough room for the tubers to develop. Chocolate Lily is attractive to pollinators and looks lovely in mass plantings.

A compact form of an Australian classic, Little Eric Banksia (𝘉𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴𝘪𝘢 𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢 &#8216;Little Eric&#8217;) offers beautiful blooms for gardens of all sizes.
This plant is a fun-sized cultivar of 𝘉𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴𝘪𝘢 𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢, which is found in coastal NSW woodlands in sandy soil. Little Eric Banksia is believed to be a chance garden seedling propagated by Richard Anderson of Merricks Nursery on the Mornington Peninsula.
This baby banksia grows to around 2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide, making it a popular screening shrub. Little Eric Banksia has a long flowering period from winter through spring, when bright red-orange cylindrical flowers emerge, attracting honey eating birds and insects. The dense, heath-like foliage also provides a place to nest or rest for creatures.
A member of the Protea family, this plant is hardy and suits a range of growing conditions. For the best and brightest flowers, plant your Little Eric Banksia in well-drained soil in full sun. Its upright form looks great combined with native grasses and weeping shrubs.

Blue Pincushion (𝘉𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) is a delightful ornamental flower that catches the eye.
This plant is found all over Australia in open forest, woodland and sand dunes, and is widespread throughout most of Victoria. Named for the hemispherical pincushion shape of their flower clusters, Blue Pincushion blooms in spring and can reward lucky gardeners by also appearing in autumn.
This clumping perennial features hairy, pale green leaves and the tiny blue flowers are a nectar source for native butterflies.
𝘉𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 is a monotypic genus, which means it contains just this one species. Blue Pincushion was previously placed in its own family, but is now classified within Goodeniaceae, the Fanflower family.
Blue Pincushion looks lovely when planted in drifts or as an accent plant in mixed beds. This plant will grow in a range of conditions; however, they can be difficult to establish and rather short-lived. Do not despair – Blue Pincushion is easy to propagate from seed or by division, so there’s always another chance!

The Bulbine Lily (𝘉𝘶𝘭𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘴𝘢), also known as the Bulbine Lily, Golden Lily, or native leek, is a perennial tuberous herb, native to Australia. In Woi-wurrung language, it’s also known as a pike.
Bulbine lilies grow in temperate areas including red gum woodland, dry sclerophyll forests, grasslands and rock crevices.
Did you know that parts of the bulbine lily are edible? For millennia, this species has been a traditional food for the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung.
The bulbous corms of the plant (subterranean stem) can be roasted and eaten year-round. Containing calcium and iron, the corms are known to be nutritious and sweet in taste.
If you’re keen to grow these little beauties in your own home, these plants grow well in containers or pots. You can plant them in full or partial sun in well-drained soil.
Bulbine Lilies also have a long flowering period from spring to early autumn and will bring vibrancy and colour to your garden for many months.
If you’re visiting the Test Garden, you might notice that bees are drawn to these star-shaped flowers. This is because their textured, fuzzy stamens are particularly attractive to pollinators.

Bulbine Lily

Cats Tail (𝘉𝘶𝘭𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘴) is a late-winter bloomer that captivates visitors with its bright yellow, star-shaped flowers atop erect stems, which can grow to 1 metre in height.
Native to the Cape Province of South Africa, Cats Tail prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun, and will go dormant during summer – so enjoy its inflorescence while you can!
Cats Tail have short rhizomatous underground stems that store water and nutrients, helping them survive dry summers and making these plants easy to propagate.
Formerly placed in the lily family, bulbinellas are now considered members of the Asphodelaceae along with Red-hot Poker, a similarly striking perennial.

Caucasian Cornflower (𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 syn. 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢) will help supress weeds in your garden and look gorgeous while doing it – a true multi-tasker!
The foliage of Caucasian Cornflower is dense but low, growing to 20cm high, and is excellent at outcompeting weeds in the garden. The leaves are grey-green with a contrasting silver underside and are attractive year-round.
The undeniable drawcard of this species is the whimsical blooms it produces from late winter through spring into early summer. Large fluffy lilac-pink flowers rise above the low foliage, attracting bees and butterflies.
In the wild, Caucasian Cornflower can be found on rocky slopes and in alpine meadows across Eastern Europe and West Asia.
The home gardener might choose to place this species in a dry garden or rock garden, where it can tolerate drought once established. This plant prefers full sun with free-draining soil, and will look striking even when spent, when the blooms turn brown and textural.

Yellow Buttons (𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮) feature silvery-green foliage and bright yellow button-like flowers. This Australian native is commonly referred to as ‘everlasting’ due to its long-lasting properties as a cut flower.
Yellow Buttons are native to Australia, growing in a variety of habitats and thrive particularly well in grassy environments that are free-draining and sunny.
When dried as a cut flower, the flower retains its form and colour making it a beautiful addition to dry bouquets and flower arrangements.
Its botanical name 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 is derived from the Greek 𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘰 meaning golden and 𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴 referring to the flower head.
This flower is particularly attractive to pollinators – you might see Australian painted lady butterflies fluttering around it, as they’re drawn to the flower as a nectar source.
The common everlasting thrives in full sunlight during the middle of the day. It makes a colourful addition to home gardens due to its long flowering periods from spring to early autumn.

The magenta flowers of Rock Purslane (𝘊𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢) are hard to overlook as they float high above their foliage on slender stems.
This perennial succulent originates from central Chile’s sandy, stony coastal and inland areas. Responsive to their environment, Rock Purslane flowers close in the peak of the day’s heat in low light and windy conditions.
The bright magenta colour of these flowers is due to a special type of betalain pigment, responsible for red, purple and magenta colouration in plants within the Caryophyllales order. Other species with this pigment include beetroot and bougainvillaea.
If you’re eager to plant this species in your garden, you can find it at local nurseries. Rock Purslane is a resilient, low-maintenance, and drought-tolerant groundcover that flourishes in dry summer climates and full sun positions. These eye-catching plants have been successfully used in international public plantings in similar dry summer climates, such as California.   Their peak flowering season is from spring to early autumn.

Rock Purslane

Prickly Currant-bush (𝘊𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘮𝘢 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘢) is the only species in the Test Garden that produces fruit.
This plant flowers from late winter, before fruit begins to appear in late summer. The small, globe-shaped berries of orange and red hues are edible and high in Vitamin C. Known as ‘Morr’ in Woi-wurrung, this plant is a traditional food source for First Peoples – the berries can be eaten raw or baked into sweet dishes.
If you’d like to discover more about First Peoples’ use of plants for food, medicine and technology, visit the Milarri Garden within the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum. The garden is planted with native flora significant to the Aboriginal people of south-eastern Australia, including this evergreen shrub.
Prickly Currant-bush is found along the east coast in NSW and Victoria and also Tasmania. It appears in damp areas within woodlands, Eucalyptus forests, or cool-temperate rainforests, often along creeks or near water sources.
As suggested by its natural habitat, Prickly Currant-bush prefers part or full shade in the garden, with moist, well-draining soil. This plant can grow up to 4m tall and the tiny spines along its branchlets provide protection for small birds.

Blink and you’ll miss the Little Golden Buttons (𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘢)
Many visitors have asked our horticulturists to identify these tiny, petal-less yellow buttons growing along the borders of the Test Garden. This compact perennial forms a soft mat of silvery green foliage, providing lovely textural interest in the garden. The wiry stems resemble stilts, balancing delicate button-like flowers that appear to hover over the ground.
You’ll have to get down low to see these unique members of the Aster family – their stalks grow to only 10cm tall.
Plants in the cotula genus, including this species, are mainly found in South Africa, however some varieties are native to Australia including Ferny Cotula (𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢) and Australian Waterbuttons (𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴).
Little Golden Buttons, also known as Silver Cotula due to their foliage, prefer full sun in well-drained soil, and can get fussy in wet wintry conditions. This plant is a great choice for rock gardens and borders, and will have visitors delighting in its whimsy until the end of summer.

Standing out from the crowd is Dan&#8217;s Delight Pig&#8217;s Ear (𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 ‘𝘋𝘢𝘯’𝘴 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵’)
The broad leaves of this striking succulent catch the eye as its silver-white foliage offers a lovely contrast to the surrounding greenery.
This species’ common name refers to the similarity between its rounded leaves and the shape of a pig’s ear, while 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 literally means round or circular.
The foliage of Dan&#8217;s Delight Pig&#8217;s Ear may display hues of powdery silver to pale green, and can be tinged with rosy edges in cooler weather or in strong sunlight. In late winter and early spring, tall stems will produce orange-red bell-shaped flowers.
For home gardeners, 𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 ‘𝘋𝘢𝘯’𝘴 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵’ enjoys full sun to partial shade and can grow to 1.5m tall and 1m wide. This succulent only requires minimal water once established.

Lady Fingers (𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 &#8216;Oophylla&#8217;) is a striking succulent whose cultivar name has Greek roots (oo = egg, phylla = leaf). One look at the plump, ovoid leaves will tell you why.
𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 is native to the SW coast of Africa from Angola to the Cape Province in South Africa, found growing among grasses on windswept coastal bluffs and rocky slopes. The fleshy leaves have traditional medicinal uses for treating warts and as poultices for inflammation.
These grey-green leaves are covered in a white, powdery coating that reflects harsh sunlight and helps the plant conserve precious water. Increased sunlight rewards gardeners with beautiful reddish tones along the leaf edges. In summer, tall stems shoot up bearing salmon-red, bell-shaped flowers that dangle like tiny lanterns, attracting pollinators.
This is proper low-maintenance gardening – water sparingly (especially in winter), give it full sun to partial shade, and watch it thrive. It can grow up to 40cm tall and spreads easily from stem cuttings.

Red Flames (𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 &#8216;Campfire&#8217;, previously 𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢 &#8216;Campfire&#8217;) belongs to the 𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘦 family and is native to southern Africa, where it grows in dry regions or areas that experience regular droughts. You may notice the trees changing colour as Melbourne&#8217;s temperatures drop, but did you know that succulents are also impacted? Cooler weather can promote a red pigment called anthocyanin (flavonoid pigments) that provides plants with protection from the cold.
Red Flames grow up to 15cm tall and sport spirals of fleshy leaves that turn from light green to brilliant orange to red in full sun. This plant can survive in shadier conditions but are generally greener as a result. Clusters of small white flowers appear in autumn and winter on its upright stems, making Red Flames an excellent choice for gardeners when many other summer-flowering species are beginning to decline. Home gardeners can easily share the love when growing Red Flames as this plant is incredibly easy to propagate.
Both the botanical and common name reference the foliage’s fiery resemblance to glowing embers.

Sickle-leaf Red Crassula (𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢) is one of the brightest red blooms in the Test Garden.
This eye-catching scarlet flower is not actually a singular flower – it’s a composite of many tiny flowers, often called florets. Many florets = many seeds, which help the survival chances of Sickle-leaf Red Crassula as the wind whirls around distributing its seeds! As with fellow Test Garden favourite Matrona Stonecrop (𝘏𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘶𝘮 ‘Matrona’), the composite flower makes a terrific landing pad for pollinators.
Named for its grey, sickle-shaped foliage, the leaves of this summer-flowering succulent are arranged in opposite rows, hence the Latin epithet ‘perfoliata’ meaning ‘leaves surrounding the stem’.
This plant is a member of the Stonecrop Family (Crassulaceae), encompassing over 300 species, most of which are succulents that originate from southern continents Australia, South America and for this species – from Southern Africa. In the wild, Sickle-leaf Red Crassula is found in rocky outcrops, meadows, cliffs, and valleys.
To enjoy this plant in your garden, grow it in well-drained soil to avoid root rot, and you can propagate it easily from cuttings or seed.

Rock Samphire (𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘮𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮) is a sturdy succulent with a storied cultural and culinary past.
This hardy plant grows in coastal grasslands and rocky cliffs, managing to thrive in sandy soils and crevices on coastlines throughout much of Europe, and parts of West Asia and North Africa.
Rock Samphire belongs to the Apiaceae family, which also counts parsley, carrot and celery among its members. Sometimes called sea fennel, this aromatic plant has many uses throughout medicinal and culinary practices. An excellent source of Vitamin C, it was popular with sailors in the 17th century and was sold as ‘crest marine’ at markets in London. Shakespeare buffs may even recall a mention of the dangerous trade of foraging for samphire in an evocative cliffside scene from King Lear. Today, chefs have many uses for the zesty flavour of Rock Samphire – stir frying, salads, pickling, and as a flavouring for gin.
This widespread plant is common in coastal gardens, and makes an excellent addition to home gardens for its appeal to pollinators.

Delicate Ivy-leaved Cyclamen (𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘮) blooms herald the beginning of autumn.
A member of the primrose family (Primulaceae), this hardy perennial flourishes from late summer, producing one flower per slender stem. The pink to white blooms are lovely to look at and have whimsically been compared to outstretched fairy wings. Ivy-leaved Cyclamen is named for its attractive ivy-shaped leaves, usually grey-green with silver and white marbling. This foliage will endure through winter until the plant falls dormant in late spring.
Grow this cyclamen in well-drained soil to avoid the corms rotting and ensure it receives partial shade in your garden. Ivy-leaved Cyclamen may self-seed, rewarding you with a carpet of pretty pink flowers across the garden – sometimes even sprouting through gravel!
Ivy-leaved Cyclamen is one of the smaller plants in the Test Garden, growing to 12cm. In the wild, it can be found growing across western Asia and southern Europe under deciduous trees and rocky areas.

Scarborough Lily (𝘊𝘺𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) is the gift that keeps on giving – not only is it long-flowering, from late spring to mid-autumn, but its bulbs also produce lots of offsets, making it easy to propagate. This plant has also been known to produce an odd flower out of season. Who doesn’t love a wildcard in the garden?
Native to the Cape Provinces in South Africa, Scarborough Lily belongs to the amaryllis family, just like Daffodils. Legend has it that its common name came after a South African shipwreck off the coast of Scarborough washed up crates of bulbs that looked just like daffodils. When locals planted their loot, however, these stunning scarlet flowers bloomed instead, much to their delight.
The botanical name origin is more substantiated &#8211; 𝘊𝘺𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 comes from the Greek &#8216;Kyrtos&#8217;, meaning ‘curved’ and &#8216;anthos&#8217; – ‘flower’. This refers to the flower head that bends downward from the top of the stalk. 𝘌𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 describes the elevation of the flower head over the leaves.

Tall Dampiera (𝘋𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘢) is a beautiful native plant that provides excellent groundcover.
This woody perennial grows in sandy soils in south west Western Australia, where it can be found across open heathland and woodland.
Tall Dampiera has soft green-grey foliage that can feel hairy to touch, and it produces blue or purple flowers from winter through spring.
This species only grows to 50cm high, however both its common and botanical name (altissima) reference its height – tall! – in comparison to other varieties of Dampiera.
Tall Dampiera is a member of Goodeniaceae, the Fanflower family, alongside fellow Test Garden species Blue Pincushion (𝘉𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴).
This plant is a lovely addition to the garden – it just needs free draining soil, a sunny position and light to moderate watering once established.

Blue Flax Lily (𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘢 ‘𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦’), also known as the Paroo Lily, is a compact evergreen perennial. The blue tones through its green foliage provide a lovely point of difference to other species of 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢.
The Blue Flax Lily is known to be hardy, tolerant of cold and drought, and according to Head Gardener Russell – almost unkillable by the home gardener! Plant it in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade for best results.
The Blue Flax Lily usually begins producing its dainty light blue flowers in spring, however this plant started flowering in the Test Garden earlier than expected. We are taking note of these outliers in the Test Garden, and will potentially collect seed from this plant if it proves to be longer flowering. 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘢 can also produce berries in late summer and autumn.
Native to Australia, this plant grows in dense clumps and can be found throughout eastern Victoria. Indigenous plant uses for the Flax Lily include dye-making from berries, pounding roots to make bread, and leaf plaiting and weaving for ties and baskets [Zena Cumpston, Indigenous Plant Use].

Carthusian Pink (𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮) stands tall above the other spring beauties.
Carthusian Pink belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family and can be found in many parts of mainland Europe. Its slender flowering spikes are topped with bright pink flowers, which rise above the grass-like green foliage.
This plant name boasts a fascinating backstory – ‘Carthusian’ refers to an 11th century order of monks in the French Alps who were famous for their cultivation of these flowers. Surprisingly, the ‘Pink’ in the common name relates not to their colour but to pinking shears, which give a serrated effect when cutting fabric, just like the serrated petals of many plants in the Dianthus genus.
Carthusian Pink is long-flowering and drought-tolerant. It prefers full sun and can be grown easily from seed, divided from larger clumps or from cuttings.

Presenting the charming, long-flowering Denim Blue Twinspur (𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢 ‘Denim Blue’)
This evergreen herbaceous perennial has been an ongoing source of beauty in the Test Garden, adding colour at a time when many other species have finished flowering. Denim Blue Twinspur produces smoky lavender blue flowers that grow on low mounds of green foliage. These richly-coloured blooms will eventually fade to a denim blue hue – hence its common name.
‘Twinspur’ refers to the two spurs found on the back of the flower, which contain an oil collected by wild bees in 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢’s native habitat of South Africa and Lesotho. This species also attracts butterflies while resisting harsh conditions, making it popular with home gardeners looking to entice pollinators.
Diascia spread gently via underground stems and can be divided in the spring as a way of controlling the plant’s spread, and propagating new plants.
Cultivars like Denim Blue Twinspur are hardy, easily grown and can flower multiple times a season. You can find this plant in dense, compact clumps along the paths of the Test Garden.

Timing is everything for Mediterranean bulb Sea Squill (𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢 syn. 𝘜𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢).
At the end of summer, when landscapes can look tired and parched, Sea Squill sends up spectacular flower spikes that can reach 1.5 metres tall, covered in starry white blooms.
Like many autumn bulbs, Sea Squill produces foliage and flowers at different times. It goes dormant underground to survive hot, dry summers, then as autumn approaches, a greyish-lilac stalk emerges, covered in tiny hairs that give it a suede-like texture. Flowering starts at the base with white, six-petalled stars, working its way upward and releasing a subtle perfume that attracts bees. Once the flower stalk withers, Sea Squill bulbs will produce a rosette of dark green leaves that will last the winter before dying back in summer.
In its native rocky coastal habitat around the Mediterranean, the large bulbs of Sea Squill are often found clustered together, sitting right at the soil surface or even protruding through it because of natural division over time.
Sea Squill has a history of use in traditional medicine in Greece where it is also gifted as a protective charm in Christmas and New Year rituals. However, the bulbs are so highly toxic that they’re often processed down into rat poison.
Don’t let that put you off – Sea Squill is a wonderful low maintenance plant in the garden and requires very little water. This plant should reward us with a long-lasting display of flowers in the Test Garden.

Pale Purple Coneflower (𝘌𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢) is one of our most paparazzi-ed plants.
This hardy, herbaceous perennial is a member of the Asteraceae family and a close relative of sunflowers, daisies and ragweed. Asteraceaes are well-loved by gardeners for their splashes of colour and pollinator-attracting power. What they all have in common is a composite flower head, consisting of ray florets (the vividly coloured petals that attract bees and butterflies) and disk flowers (the small blooms that form the plant&#8217;s central head).
Pale Purple Coneflowers are native to dry regions of North America such as prairies, savannahs and glades. Plants in the 𝘌𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢 genus have been used in traditional medicine to support the immune system, and were cultivated by Native American people to treat bites, stings, toothaches and colds.
These plants can be grown at home in full sun to part shade, with well-draining soil. They can take some time to establish themselves but will reward you with a long flowering time, tall stems and some very showy blooms.

Silky Eremophila (𝘌𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘢 𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘢)is a compact, evergreen shrub native to Western Australia, where it’s listed as Critically Endangered under the Biodiversity Conservation Act, yet it is widely available in nurseries.
Many plants in the Eremophila genus (also known as Emu Bush) are used by First Nations people for ceremonial, food and medicinal purposes.
Silky Eremophila catches the eye with soft, silvery-grey foliage and pale purple tubular flowers that appear from late winter to mid-spring.
𝘌𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘢 is derived from Greek, meaning ‘desert lover’, giving a hint to this plant’s preferred growing conditions: dry climates in well drained soils! Silky Eremophila is drought tolerant and frost tolerant but needs to be grown in full sun.

Oxford Blue Sea Holly (𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘪 ‘Oxford Blue’) brings ethereal colour to the garden through flower and foliage.
This hybrid member of the carrot family (Apiaceae) from the Laak Boorndap plant list has striking thistle-like metallic blue flowers and violet blue stalks that sit high above the green and silver foliage. The flowerheads dry beautifully, making them popular cut flowers for florists.
Parent species 𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘪, commonly known as Mediterranean Sea Holly, grows in the wild across the mountains of southwestern Europe and parts of North Africa.
Home gardeners will be happy to hear that this cultivar of Mediterranean Sea Holly is particularly robust. Suitable for dry climate gardens, this plant prefers free draining and nutrient poor soils and can tolerate drought once established. Planting in full sun will provide even brighter blue flowers. Deadhead spent flowers to be rewarded with a long flowering period from spring through to winter.

Blue Devil (𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘮) is one of our spikiest friends in the Test Garden!
Blue Devil belongs to the Apiaceae family along with other well-known species such as Carrot, Parsley, and Coriander. We also have some family members in the Test Garden including Rock Samphire (𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘮𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮), Blue Lace Flower (𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘢) and Wild Parsnip (𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢).
This native perennial is found in temperate woodlands and grasslands in all states and territories except for NT. Its unusual, spiky bracts offer an interesting point of visual difference in the Test Garden.
Blue Devil grows best in sunny positions and can tolerate frost well – their fleshy taproot sustains them through winter until conditions improve, much like some orchids and lilies. They can be easily grown from seed and attract bees and other insects.

Year-round beauty Gopher Spurge (𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘥𝘢) is always turning heads in the Test Garden.
𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘥𝘢 adds striking upright structure to the garden, offering bold textural contrast with its blue-green, pointed foliage, and its long-lasting yellow flower bracts provide extended seasonal interest and vibrant colour.
Bees and flies have been spotted among the brachts, but this plant can be toxic to humans (and garden pests like gophers – hence the name!). When broken, Gopher Spurge stems emit a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes, so pop on your gardening gloves when handling.
Gopher Spurge belongs to 𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘢, one of the largest and most diverse plant genera, with over 2,000 species. Originating from the Mediterranean region (southern Europe to southwestern Asia), this plant loves sun and well-drained soil, and is excellent at self-sowing.

Bloody Crane&#8217;s-bill (𝘎𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮 ‘Album’) is a spreading herbaceous perennial making the most of increased room to grow!
Despite its bloody name (𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮 refers to the blood-red flowers of the straight species), this cultivar produces small, pure white flowers – hence the Latin epithet (album = white). Bloody Crane’s-bill has dark green leaves that turn a lovely red in autumn.
This geranium species is one of the hardiest of its genus, noted for tolerating hot summers and cold winters better than its relatives. They are a popular addition to cottage gardens where they are used as groundcovers in full sun or part shade. They have a long flowering period between spring and autumn providing nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies.
Bloody Crane’s-bill ‘Album’ is a cultivar of 𝘎𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮, which is native to Europe and parts of Asia and can be found in grasslands, coastal sand dunes, open woodland and rocky slopes.

Pink Pokers (𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴) are a long-flowering delight from south-west Western Australia, found across the wheatbelt and Geraldton sandplains.
This plant has huge inflorescences that stand on beautiful long stalks to attract honeyeaters. Pink Pokers normally bloom from mid-winter, but their flowers arrived early in the Test Garden in 2026. They will continue blooming through to spring, and some prolific Pink Pokers can produce up to 25 flowers!
Pink Pokers prefer well-draining, sandy soil, but you can source grafted plants (usually on 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢) that will perform well in any garden. Deadhead them and they will stay healthy and thrive for years.

Matrona Stonecrop (𝘏𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘶𝘮 &#8216;Matrona&#8217; previously 𝘚𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘮 ‘Matrona’) is a succulent herbaceous perennial that&#8217;s easy to spot, standing tall with clusters of light pink cloud-like flowers.
Flowering during late summer and autumn, the flowers on this plant are attractive to bees and butterflies. The Matrona Stonecrop is widely recognised as being a long-lasting drought-tolerant plant, making it a popular addition to many gardens.
Its common name references ‘stonecrop’ as this plant is often found growing in the wild on rocky or stony ledges.
It’s known as being low maintenance, tolerating periods of drought and grows well in full sun.
If you’re keen to grow Matrona Stonecrops at home, you can buy seed packets or potted plants from local nurseries. These plants grow well when planted in groups and are well-suited to hot, dry and coastal conditions.
If you’re wondering about growing it in the winter, the plant dies down to the ground in the colder months and new shoots will appear in spring.

This species has been blooming in the Test Garden since mid-spring, producing clusters of lemon-tinged flowers atop maroon foliage. The contrasting tones bring warmth to the midstorey planting, sitting harmoniously with the silver and green foliage of surrounding plants. New foliage is grey-green tinged with purple that ages into the maroon, like the variations in a gooseberry.
Gooseberry Fool is a popular choice for gardeners due to its hardiness and tolerance to drought. This resilient plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and can be propagated from seeds, division, or stem cuttings. It also gets the pollinator tick of approval from bees and butterflies.
Gooseberry Fool belongs to the Crassulaceae family, the Stonecrops, succulents known for thriving in dry, arid conditions. Other Crassulaceae members in the Test Garden include Pig’s Ear (𝘊𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢).
