The term Salon was originally the name of the official art exhibitions organised by the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture (Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture) and its successor the Academy of Fine Arts (Académie des Beaux Arts). The format of group exhibiting became known as The Salon hang, with walls filled with layers of paintings and floor space occupied with multiply sculptures. It was a place where independent artists could have their artworks seen by wider audiences and these exhibitions attracted thousand of visitors.
