Where will the event take place?
The Melbourne Cheer Challenge will take place at Fed Square, right in the heart of Melbourne. The performance area will be set up outside in the Main Square, surrounded by Melbourne’s iconic city skyline.
How do I register?
Registrations are free and open to everyone. Simply register online via the REGISTER HERE button above. Once registered, you’ll receive confirmation with event details, the routine, and updates leading up to the big day.
Please register individually. One registration is required per person.
Do I need to bring anything?
No. Just yourself and your team spirit! We’ll provide every participant with a pair of red and gold pom poms to use during the routine. They’re yours to keep as a souvenir of the day.
What time is the event?
The event will take place on Sunday 6 September 2026. Please arrive at Main Square 11.30am and check in for a 1pm sharp performance.
What time do I need to arrive?
We recommend arriving by 11.30am to allow enough time to check in and warm up before the performance.
How can I learn the routine?
Once you register, you’ll be sent a confirmation email with the full routine breakdown. You can also watch the video below.

Will someone be leading us on the day?
Yes! The 49ers Gold Rush cheerleaders will lead the cheer, alongside professional dance instructors.
Whether you’re an experienced cheerleader or trying it for the first time, you’ll be guided every step of the way.
Will the event be accessible?
Yes. We want everyone to feel welcome and able to participate.
The event will feature Auslan interpretation, and there will be a dedicated accessible participation area for those taking part in the world record attempt, as well as a separate accessible viewing area for spectators.
What should I wear?
Whatever makes you feel part of the moment, your cheer uniform or your favourite activewear.
Please wear comfortable, supportive footwear that’s safe to dance in. As the event will take place on Fed Square’s paved surface, we recommend runners or sneakers with good grip.
Do I need to be an experienced cheerleader?
Not at all. The event is open to all ages and ability levels, from seasoned squad members to first-timers.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Participation is completely free.
What happens if it rains?
The event will go ahead rain or shine unless there are severe weather conditions that make it unsafe to perform. Any updates will be sent via email and posted on Fed Square’s social channels.
Will the event be filmed or photographed?
Yes! This is a public event and there will be official photography and filming for promotional and media purposes. By participating, you agree that your image may appear in media coverage, Fed Square, Visit Victoria and the 49ers’ communications.
Can friends and family come to watch?
Definitely! Spectators are welcome to come down, cheer you on and enjoy the spectacle.
Will this be an official Guinness World Record attempt?
We’ll be aiming to beat the standing record for the largest mass cheerleading dance involving 1,371 participants set in Japan in 2015.
This attempt will be adjudicated by The Australian Book of Records.
How do I get to Fed Square?
Fed Square is located opposite Flinders Street Station and is easily accessible by tram, train and bus. We encourage participants to use public transport where possible.
If you’re driving, the Fed Square Car Park is located onsite. More information about our car park can be found here.
