General Strike presents ‘STORY TYPE’ an animated film inspired by some of Melbourne’s most celebrated writers, launching at Fed Square’s new digital façade to coincide with Melbourne Writers Festival 2018, today Thursday, August 23 at 6:00pm.
Story Type, a 20-minute film commissioned by Federation Square, features a selection of quotes from books set in Melbourne that are animated on screen. The idea is to explore Melbourne, a UNESCO City of Literature, through the eyes of its authors. In the spirit of concrete poetry, the film uses typographic animation to bring fragments of each work to life.
The film features a range of both new and established Australian voices, including Helen Garner, Alice Pung, Michelle de Kretser, Nam Le, Christos Tsiolkas, Tony Birch, Emily Bitto and Frank Hardy. The film is drawn from 12 novels, one memoir and one short story, all set in Melbourne.
The film was specifically designed for Federation Square’s new digital screen. “Our aim in creating the film was to really bring the building to life. Federation Square is a place for all Melbournians to gather together, so we have tried to choose quotes that reflect a little of the diversity of the Melbourne experience,” says Billiet.
The film was commissioned by Federation Square to coincide with this year’s Melbourne Writers Festival and will continue to show on rotation throughout the year.
