Rotation (Jazz edition): Shio + Dem Large
PRESENTED BY FED SQUARE WITH WAX MUSEUM RECORDS
To celebrate Melbourne International Jazz Festival, we’re hosting a jazz-themed outdoor vinyl listening gathering, featuring two Melbourne-based DJs and selectors – Shio and Dem Large, from Wax Museum Records.
The decks will be set up at the top of the steps, so pop on by on your way to a MIJF gig or settle in for a proper listening session (or a boogie!) as Wax Museum Record locals Shio and Dem Large take you through a selection of jazz and MIJF-inspired picks from their record collections.
This event is presented as part of ROTATION – a regular program of pop-up, low-key vinyl listening gatherings throughout the Square, where everyone’s invited. ROTATION hands over the decks to local, grassroots selectors and DJs, introducing you to some of the passionate vinyl collectors, curators and tastemakers who help make up our local independent record scene.
MEET THE DJ-SELECTORS
Shio is a Japanese-born, Melbourne/ Narrm-based DJ and selector. Through her regular DJ sets around town and her weekly radio show ‘Eternal Rhythm’ on PBS106.7, Shio is passionate about sharing music. Always on the lookout for new sounds, Shio gravitates towards many genres from different places and times, with a distinct jazz flavour.

Musical interests sparked early for Dem Large, surrounded by an eclectic mix of sounds filtered through his family’s record collections. Mixtapes filled with elements of soul, jazz and hip hop formed a solid foundation and many years behind the counter at Melbourne’s Wax Museum Records shaped his selections. Moving through a range of varied styles, from the deep dubbed-out to the soulful and percussive, Dem Large is always on the lookout for new avenues of expression.

MEET OUR LOCAL RECORD STORE
Wax Museum Records is an independent Melbourne-based record store, music label and event organiser that has been part of the city’s underground music scene since 2006. Based at 250 Flinders Street (our neighbour!), Wax Museum focuses on vinyl, DJ culture and genres that include hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz and electronic music. Wax Museum Records is an important part of Melbourne’s independent music community, bringing together artists, performers and music lovers.
