A vibrant fusion of dance, art and music celebrating queer Asian identity through Mulan’s legacy.

Step into a world where ancient legend meets the modern magic of Queer Asian Excellence.

Charlie Wan and Dyan Tai present: Mulan’s Tea Party – a bold new experience merging dance, drag, and live music into a kaleidoscopic celebration of queer Asian identity.

This 20-minute live performance features original compositions by Dyan Tai – renowned Malaysian-Chinese hyperpop artist and founder of Worship Queer Collective – alongside electrifying choreography and curation by Naarm-based performer and producer Charlie Wan. Together, these two visionary non-binary artists pay homage to the story of Mulan, reimagined through a contemporary lens of gender fluidity, cultural pride, and artistic rebellion.

Set against an immersive outdoor backdrop, Mulan’s Tea Party explores how queer artists connect to ancient stories and reframe them through modern movement, hyperpop, traditional dance forms, Chinese opera aesthetics, and the transformative power of drag. Through this dazzling collision of personal storytelling and cultural symbolism, the show invites audiences of all ages to witness a vibrant, triumphant retelling of what it means to embrace your identity – especially in the face of gender norms and cultural expectations.

This is more than a performance – it’s a love letter to our younger selves who searched for reflections in ancient myths. It’s a reminder that queerness and culture do not cancel each other out – they can blossom together.

Presented by Melbourne Fringe and Fed Square.
