In celebration of World Press Freedom Day, Fed Square presents a special 50th anniversary screening of political thriller All The President’s Men on the Big Screen.
World Press Freedom Day on May 3 was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 as a date to celebrate and evaluate press freedom around the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have died or been killed while doing their job. The day raises awareness for the freedom of expression and the duty of governments around the world to respect and uphold these freedoms.
To mark World Press Freedom Day, we’re screening the critically acclaimed 1976 political thriller All The President’s Men. Starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman with a screenplay written by William Goldman, the film is based on the 1974 non-fiction book by Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Rob Woodward about their investigation of the Watergate Scandal – a scandal which ultimately brought down Nixon’s presidency.
Curator’s notes
For audiences, this edge-of-your-seat newsroom thriller offers an opportunity to consider the many and varied ways our media and political landscape has changed since the 1970s – while reaffirming the importance of credible, verifiable information, and media trust. On World Press Freedom Day, this true story celebrates those professionals who dedicate themselves to asking questions, and speaking truth to power.
