Nongkrong – Pasar Senja (twilight fair)

Nongkrong is a festival curated by a network of Indonesian-Australians dedicated to creating spaces for their diaspora to connect, maintain ties to their homeland(s), and cultivate their collective identity. Nongkrong translates to ‘hanging out’: the intentional, open-ended time spent with others.

Nongkrong events creatively explore and celebrate the in-between identities of Indonesian-Australians through food, arts and dialogue. Nongkrong’s production team is intergenerational and intercultural, engaging new migrants, long-term residents, and those born in Indonesia, Australia, or elsewhere.

By both honouring traditions and building upon them, Nongkrong aims to nurture a sense of belonging, amplify the diverse experiences within the Indonesian-Australian community, and reimagine what it means to be Australian-Indonesian on unceded Aboriginal Land.

Ali

Ali is a musical project originating from Jakarta, Indonesia, initiated by John Paul Patton and Arswandaru Cahyo. Ali incorporates Middle Eastern culture with elements of 70s Indonesian rock, cinematic soul, Afro beat, funk and disco to create a new groove and all-new sound. With lyrics sung in Arabic, Ali builds on the influence of Middle Eastern art and music, which over centuries has assimilated itself deep into Indonesian culture and way of life. Middle Eastern beats with a South-East Asian twist – Ali promises a unique experience of the melting pot of influences present in contemporary Indonesian music.

Candra Darusman ft Lemes

Candra Darusman is an iconic Indonesian jazz musician, singer-songwriter, and a driving force behind Indnonesia’s Pop Kreatif movement. Famous for his smooth vocals and genre-blending work with Chaseiro and Karimata, Candra has spent decades shaping the soundtrack of modern Indonesia—onstage and behind the scenes as a champion for musicians’ rights.

For this special performance, he teams up with Lemes Band—a vibrant collective of young Indonesian musicians known for flipping classic Indonesian hits on their heads with playful, colourful, and wildly creative arrangements. Expect nostalgia, groove, and a fresh twist on songs you thought you already knew.

Budaya (0)

Budaya is the Indonesian word for culture and (0) represents the cypher, an intergral element of hip hop where dancers gather, exchange energy, and create together. They reframe Indonesian culture, blending movement, rhythm, and community.

Cristal No.5

Cristal No.5 is a DJ, producer, and event organizer known for high-energy, genre-bending sets that keep the dancefloor wild and unpredictable.

Now based on Gadigal land (Sydney) after relocating from Naarm (Melbourne), she brings a fresh perspective to the city’s underground scene. Her sets are marked by a fearless energy, weaving together sounds from across genres to create a space where musical boundaries don’t exist and the unexpected thrives.

Gamelan DanAnda

Gamelan DanAnda (GDA) is a Balinese gamelan percussion orchestra based in Darebin, Naarm. They mostly perform in the traditional Gong Kebyar style, which features shimmering cascades of metallic sound, virtuosic rhythms and breathtaking crescendos.

Modelled on a Balinese organisation style known as a Sanggar and with a community orchestra at their core, beginners and experienced players, students and professional performers come together to create a dynamic network of musical ensembles under one roof.

Komang

Komang is a Balinese-Australian singer, music producer and art worker based in Naarm (Melbourne) who creates lush alternative R&B described as ‘neo-soul with Balinese spirit’. Her music weaves together the contemporary and traditional with stories of kinship and spirit, and has seen her perform on stages such as Boiler Room Festival (Bali), Now or Never, Sun Cycle, NGV Friday Nights and We Out Here Festival (UK) as well as featured on hit shows like Heartbreak High (Netflix) and Love Me (Binge).

Matahara

Matahara is the solo project helmed by Marissa Yudinar (she/her) – an independent artist from Naarm via Jakarta. The 24-year-old artist creates forward-thinking bedroom pop that lives in a world of its own and gives light and warmth to everyone around her.

RAH

RAH’s journey into electronic music began on the dance floor in the early ’00s, working up a sweat raving to 60/180 pulse of drum & bass.Her genre-bending sound is playful and ever-evolving, blending the old and new, with roots anchored in jazzy, soul-inflected rhythms – bringing to mind the collective spirit and careless abandon of being in the trance of dance.

Stale Biskitz

Poppin Jack & Keanu are core members of Stale Biskitz, one of Australia’s longest standing street dance crews focused on the style of Popping. They have performed, taught and studied at numerous international events from the USA to Europe and throughout Asia. Both dancers are brothers of mixed Javanese background, and continue to explore their artistry through practice, research and dance.

Suara Dance

Suara Dance is Australia’s leading Indonesian dance and music company based in the Inner West of Sydney. Suara Dance presents an energetic mix of dance, body percussion and song, with a blend of traditional and contemporary influences.This group brings liveliness, rhythm colour, and heritage to their performances.

Sanggar Lestari

Founded in 1989, Sanggar Lestari is a traditional Indonesian dance group based in Melbourne, Australia. We specialise in traditional and modern Indonesian dances from the East to West and perform dances with our group of adults and children throughout Australia and abroad.

From 3–9pm, Pasar Senja will be hosting a number of Indonesian food stalls serving a selection classic (and not-so-classic) Indonesian dishes from some of the best Indonesian restaurants including: Makan who will be serving their infamous chicken satay, grilled corn and rendang; Diana’s Kitchen dishing up nasi tumpeng and favourite traditional snacks; Warkop delivering Australian-Indonesian sandwiches and drinks; and PBK Noodles will be joining from Clayton to sling their handmade egg noodles.

Look out for the Nongkrong Kitchen gerobak (street food cart) that will serve classic Indonesian street snacks reimagined through collaborations with diaspora chefs including Nagesh Seethiah (Manzè), Rosheen Kaul, and Narit (Yang Thai).

Pop into Nongkrong’s Senja Design Market (sunset market), a design market that brings together Indonesian designers and artists, with handmade goods spanning jewellery, clothes, homewares, zines, books and exclusive Nongkrong merch, as well a rare chance to get Bali’s Fed by Made merch in Melbourne. Stalls include Cahyati Press, Slow Burn Books, Nusantao Giftshop, Studio Ruang and more.

From 3–6pm, artist Patriot Mukmin will also be hosting a free, pop-in weaving workshop at the Senja Design Market.
