Marram: Deadly Fringe container exhibition

Discover Marram, a striking exhibition by Iluka Sax-Williams inside the Deadly Fringe Container.

Iluka Sax-Williams is a proud Tibrean (Torres Strait) and Taungurung multi-disciplinary artist based in Naarm (Melbourne). Iluka’s practice spans visual art, dance, fashion and design, drawing on cultural heritage, ancestral connections and a commitment to keeping Indigenous practices alive. His work also extends into community-focused education, including workshops exploring Possum Skin Cloaks, pyrography and immersive art experiences.

Marram explores the enduring relationship between kangaroo, Country and story. Kangaroo has roamed across these lands since time immemorial, and Aboriginal peoples across Australia have long hunted and gathered kangaroo as part of cultural practice and connection to Country.

For Marram, Iluka uses kangaroo skins as his canvas, carefully etching intricate patterns and linework into the hides through pyrography. The resulting works carry stories, knowledge and cultural memory, honouring traditions passed down through generations while bringing them into a contemporary artistic practice.
