Join us on Sunday January 19 to celebrate the beloved queen of comedy and country music’s 79th birthday, with a screening of one of Dolly Parton’s most iconic films, on the Big Screen.
Gather your Dolly-loving pals, pack a picnic and head to the Square for a night of celebrating Dolly Parton’s birthday through film.
What better way to celebrate a legend on her birthday than by singing her songs? It doesn’t matter if you’re a shower singer or a Nashville superstar, we know that singing makes you feel good – especially when the tunes are as brilliant as Dolly Parton’s. Vicky Jacobs and Jacqui Hoy from Glee Club, Melbourne’s original singalong choir, will have you hootin’ and hollerin’ along with Dolly’s greatest hits in a knees up that will leave you feeling great!
Join us on Sunday evening for a old-fashioned hoedown, as Disco Rodeo Boot Scooting leads an all-in boot scooting dance to celebrate Dolly’s birthday. Kitty and Lu will bring their love for dance, music and dialled-up costuming to this high-energy open class in the Main Square, to teach you line dances step-by-step – including a line dance to Dolly’s 9 to 5!
No experience necessary for this fun-filled hour. Following the boot scooting, you can try out your new moves as the DJ performs a Dolly-inspired DJ set, then relax in a deckchair to enjoy the evening film screening.
Backing up her appearance at Fed Square spinning tracks for NYE 2024, Katie is back! A fan of Dolly Parton and Country music more broadly, Katie has her own Country music show on Melbourne-based online radio station Skylab, where she shares her eclectic taste in Country and Americana music. Expect anything from old-school classics from Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Joni Mitchell to modern Country, such as Smog and Richard Buckner.
Many DJs try to avoid the tags and pinholes that genres create. Most of them fail to do so. However, most of them aren’t Melbourne authority Katie Pearson. A blank insignia, Katie has avoided this through a unique, yet authentic musical journey. She has long been at the forefront of Australia’s queer dance scene, most notably as co¬host of “gay ass disco”, The Outpost. However, when you can regularly produce moments of dance floor ecstasy that Front Leftists thought only possible in the ’90s, you quickly become the scenes worst kept secret.

In this 1980 screwball comedy, Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman) is the most ‘sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot’ boss on the planet. Over dealing with him, his top assistant Violet (Lily Tomlin) along with co-workers Doralee (Dolly Parton) and Judy (Jane Fonda) decide to take matters into their own hands, kidnapping him and running his business without him. But just how long can they keep him tied up?
