Shadows in Twin Cities is a project by artists Jessica Wilson and Gijong Yoo 유기종, which brings together children from Jeonju (Korea) and Melbourne (Australia) in unusual conversations between each other and their city landscapes.
Shadows in Twin Cities: 쌍둥이 도시의 그림자들 features three events designed for children aged 5–11 years that take place across ArtPlay and Fed Square (Melbourne), and Palbok Art Factory (South Korea) during Asia TOPA.
In this participative intercultural workshop, you will meet a new friend in Jeonju, Korea via a life-size video screen. Guided by artists in Melbourne and in Jeonju, you’ll discover new and imaginative ways to have a one-on-one exchange involving hand gestures, translated conversation, movement and play. Next, you’ll each use translucent hand-crafted Hanji paper to create a life-sized drawing of each other, then head outside and animate these forms in the wind. Discover how your new friend’s translucent shadow takes on a character as it swirls and drifts through the Melbourne air. At the same time, your own shadow will be exploring the landscape in Jeonju, Korea. Meet Me (너랑 나랑), is located at our neighbours, ArtPlay.
A large-scale video installation takes place simultaneously on our Big Screen and a civic location in Jeonju. Children candidly attempt conversation as if with the city itself, whilst their conversation partner stands huge in the alternate urban landscape. With wind-animated Hanji Shadows, a hypnotic dialogue is created been child and place.
The shadows of children in Korea have flown across hemispheres. Can you find where they’ve landed? Search for hidden Hanji shadows made by Melbourne children of their Korean friends, throughout Fed Square. Find where the flying shadows landed by locating pasted figures in unusual locations. Can you find them all? Hear their stories and see if you can have a dialogue with them using your body.
Note: These events are suitable for children aged 5 – 11 years.
Shadows in Twin Cities is presented by ArtPlay, Asia TOPA, Arts Centre Melbourne, Fed Square and the Jeonju Cultural Foundation.
This project is created in collaboration with the Jeonju Cultural Foundation, supported by the Australian International Cultural Diplomacy Arts Fund, the Playking Foundation and Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Melbourne.
