African Music and Cultural Festival
The unmissable African Music and Cultural Festival (AMCF) returns to Melbourne’s Fed Square from November 17th to 19th, 2023, marking its 10-year anniversary. This three-day celebration of African culture promises a vibrant and immersive experience, featuring music, food, fashion, film, dance, art, and more, with over 35 African countries and community organisations participating.
Friday, November 17th, kicks off the festivities with an outdoor cinema showcasing African Australian short films, spoken word performances, and live jazz music. It’s an ideal opportunity for city workers and friends to enjoy African street food and drinks in a festival atmosphere.
Saturday, November 18th, is the main event, offering 12 hours of non-stop entertainment. Attendees can enjoy cultural band performances, music, dance, fashion, art, shopping, and mouth-watering African street food. Free drumming lessons for all ages are available, providing insights into the diverse African continent.
Sunday, November 19th, continues the celebration with another 10 hours of entertainment, including a forum discussing topical African Australian issues. Throughout the weekend, families can enjoy children’s entertainment, including free African drumming classes, AFL activities, face painting, and more.With over 55,000 attendees, the AMCF has become a “must-do” spring event, consistently ranked among Melbourne’s top events. It embodies the theme of “Celebrating Diversity and Harmony,” fostering cross-cultural awareness, mutual respect, education, understanding, and unity.
The festival pays homage to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation with an opening Welcome to Country ceremony each day. It enjoys support from government officials, recognising its role in strengthening communities and celebrating multicultural success.
Best of all, this family-friendly festival is entirely free, thanks to the generous funding provided by the Victoria State Government. The AMCF invites everyone to join in and experience the beauty, vibrancy, and warmth of African culture. Low Waste Festival
Thanks to the closed loop system from Green My Plate, we are proud to say the upcoming African Music & Cultural Festival will be a low waste event. All food vendors will be serving up their delicious food on the reusable Green My Plate plates and bowls which you then simply place into the pink bins within the venue. The team from Green My Plate will be continuously collecting the reusable plates and cups to then wash and recirculate, leaving a cleaner footprint, and diverting single-use food packaging from landfill.
The process is simple. Simply head to your choice of food vendor, order up, then place your reusable plate in the pink bin.
The plates will be reused over and over at events across Victoria. We encourage and thank everyone for doing their part and assisting us with making dishes, not waste.
