African Music and Cultural Festival 2026

The African Music and Cultural Festival (AMCF) returns to Fed Square in 2026, bringing three days of African food, live music and culture to the heart of Melbourne. With free entry, the festival welcomes visitors of all ages to explore, connect and try something new.

Now in its 13th year, Australia’s largest African festival is a firm favourite on Melbourne’s events calendar, attracting more than 50,000 people annually. The celebration brings together the food, music, fashion and culture of over 40 African nations in one place.

Food lovers can discover Ethiopian injera, West African jollof rice, fufu, African barbecue, street food and sweets. Stallholders share dishes rich in flavour and tradition, offering opportunities to discover a new favourite or enjoy a familiar taste of home. Sunday’s Jollof Rice Wars adds friendly rivalry as competing nations celebrate their versions of the much-loved dish.

Live performances fill the weekend with traditional and contemporary sounds. Closing acts include Zimbabwean artist Niasha on Friday, Kenyan artist Elsy Wameyo on Saturday and South African act Afro Space Interchange on Sunday.

Beyond the stage, visitors can join free drumming and dance sessions, explore fashion and market stalls, and discover African-Australian short films, art and spoken word. Families can enjoy face painting and circus activities on the River Terrace, with giant Somali puppetry opening Sunday’s celebrations.

Throughout the festival, shared meals, conversations and spontaneous dancing create opportunities for people from different backgrounds to come together. Whether attending with family, meeting friends or exploring solo, visitors can experience the creativity and community spirit that make AMCF a highlight of Melbourne’s spring.
