Fed Square Capital Works Projects

Our Vision for Fed Square

Fed Square is a globally iconic destination and Melbourne’s gathering place, where visitors are immersed in unique cultural experiences and architecture that celebrate Victoria’s rich heritage and identity.

Over the next two years Fed Square is undertaking a number of projects to refresh and renew the precinct. This is post the 2019/2020 Government Review of Fed Square which included a $20 million package of works to upgrade the site, targeting many of the issues raised through the review. This is the biggest investment in the Fed Square precinct since its creation.

The funding will support dozens of projects across the Fed Square site. These focus on improving the visitor experience, enhancing events, supporting Fed Square’s cultural partners, improving the food and beverage experience, and upgrading safety and access. Key projects include:

  • A new immersive visitor centre that will showcase regional Victoria.
  • State-of-the-art digital wayfinding displays that will better connect Fed Square to the Yarra and surrounding precincts and make it easier for visitors to navigate the site.
  • New lighting that, as well as making Fed Square safer at night, will accentuate its architecture and enable the precinct to light up for city-wide celebrations and commemorations.
  • Upgrades in the Yarra Building for Koorie Heritage Trust use.
  • Important upgrades to The Edge theatre and Atrium, including replacing screens and seating and improving disability access.
  • Upgrades to the NGV’s fire protection system to preserve and protect its world-famous collection.

Importantly, this investment will also free up extra capacity for Fed Square to expand its civic and cultural program, including festivals and community activities.

Fed Square will also work closely with Heritage Victoria and other design and heritage experts to plan and deliver these upgrades.

The recommendations around strengthened design governance, along with the design principles and strategies outlined in the review, will be key to any future projects.
