With a US election looming and four billion people heading to the polls in 2024, journalists Masha Gessen, John Lyons and Louisa Lim discuss the threats and challenges to democracy around the world.
Journalist Masha Gessen is one of the world’s leading experts on authoritarianism. John Lyons is the Walkley Award-winning Global Affairs Editor of the ABC, and has been a foreign correspondent in Washington, New York, the Philippines and the Middle East. Together with host Louisa Lim, these expert journalists will explore imperialism, corruption, autocracy and other global challenges to modern democracy.
With more than half of the world’s population able to vote in elections this year – including the pivotal upcoming US election – there has never been a more urgent time to confront the future of democracy.

Masha Gessen
Masha Gessen is an opinion columnist for The New York Times and a Distinguished Professor at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. They have written extensively on The Russian-Ukrainian war, Israel/Palestine, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump. They have won numerous awards, including the George Polk Award, the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thinking, and the National Book Award. Their books include Surviving Autocracy and The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia.
John Lyons
John Lyons is one of Australia’s most experienced journalists and the Global Affairs Editor of the ABC. Previously he was Head of Investigative Journalism at the ABC, responsible for Four Corners, 7.30, Foreign Correspondent, Insiders, Australian Story, Q&amp;A and the Investigative Reporting Team. For six years, John was The Australian’s Middle East correspondent, based in Jerusalem, an experience that led him to write the bestselling Balcony Over Jerusalem. He has interviewed everyone from former Israeli prime ministers Shimon Peres and Ehud Olmert to key figures from Hezbollah and Hamas. John has won many awards, including the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award, three Walkleys and UN awards. He now lives in Sydney.
Louisa Lim
Louisa Lim is the author of Indelible City: Dispossession and Defiance in Hong Kong, which has just been published in the US. It&#8217;s been described by the New York Times as a &#8220;vivid, loving book&#8221;. It&#8217;s due to be released here in Australia next month. 
Her first book The People’s Republic of Amnesia: Tiananmen Revisited (2014), was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize and the Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism. She covered China and Hong Kong for a decade as a correspondent for the BBC and NPR and has written for the New York Times and the Guardian. Raised in Hong Kong, she lives in Australia with her two children and is now a Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne.

About the artists
This bumper edition of Radar will be hosted by Elyssia Wilson-Heti, a powerhouse in art and activism and member of iconic Queer Indigenous collective FAFSWAG (Aotearoa).
Elyssia will be joined by:
CONJAH, the collaborative force of Jahra Wasasala and ooshcon, merging Fijian and Samoan heritages into a multifaceted artistic expression spanning street dance, physical theatre, poetry, voice work, and digital art. They’ll be sharing insight into their mahi (work) and its integral relationship with the world.
Liquid Architecture (LA), helmed by Javanese-Australian director and CEO Kristi Monfries, is Australia’s leading organisation for artists working with sound and listening. Their program sits at the intersection of contemporary art and experimental music, expressed through a range of presentation, publishing, research and commissioning activities.
Trailblazing Senior First Nations dance artist and choreographer raymond blanco (Bunyi Bunyi Bumi), groundbreaking director, choreographer and dramaturg Priya Srinivasan (Sangam / Bunyi Bunyi Bumi) discussing intercultural collaboration. Working together on a new trans-disciplinary performance called Bunyi Bunyi Bumi, blanco and Srinivasan ask what is possible when we listen deeply to the Earth Mother and explore the dire consequences when we do not.
You’ll be fed by Nongkrong – the arts and food collective redefining what it means to be Indonesian and Australian – and entertained by a spicy but seamless blend of global club music from Haus of Ralph.

A night of corporate presentations and personal optimisation&#8230; but queer.
Following spots at NONSTOP WKND in 2023, Queer PowerPoint returns with a one-night-only standalone show featuring some of Melbourne&#8217;s most fun, obtuse and downright obsessive speakers.
This experimental talks series brings together queer folks to explore and share an idea, current compulsion, or ongoing fascination using that most staid and ubiquitous of programming tools &#8211; Power Point.
Reclaiming and queering the corporate presentation from our straight capitalist overlords, co-creators Xanthe Dobbie and Harriet Gillies host this night of surprising stories, secret passions and starwipes.
Artists perform a unique, 10-minute performance lecture about&#8230;well, anything. The parameters? It must be queer-and accompanied by a Microsoft Powerpoint slideshow.
Revel in the current strangeness of a digital tool from a simpler time.

Projected larger than life, Universal Everything’s parade of fantastic beings hypnotically morphs between forms and textures, from kaleidoscopic fur to molten lava, water molecules, and more. Once you’ve met the cast of colourful characters, you can jump, dance and play to bring them to life. The more you move, the more animated they become. Created from game engines, VFX software and ever-evolving algorithms, massive digital installations appear among generative artworks that grow and change in real-time, responding differently to each interaction so that no two visits are the same.
For over 20 years, UK based art and design collective Universal Everything has created vibrant experiences that mesmerise and enchant audiences. Fascinated by creating ‘soulful technology’, they&#8217;re inspired by nature, human figures and emotions. Their work explores movement, form and colour to create a world of friendly, hyperreal beings. Beneath the high-end visual effects, the creative process begins with simple hand-drawn sketches. Displayed alongside the artworks for the first time, these drawings reveal the imagination and craft behind the innovation.
Long-time innovators, Universal Everything subvert cinematic CGI, physics simulations and real-time gaming graphics to create super-sized, life affirming artworks and experiences. An ACMI curated world premiere, including four new works, Beings is Universal Everything’s largest international exhibition to date.

Beings at ACMI

Welcome to Wurrdha Marra – meaning ‘Many Mobs’ in the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language. The name comes to the NGV from the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and supports the purpose of this space in sharing the work of First Nations artists, from emerging to senior figures, and across time and place. For First Nations peoples around the world, art and design are part of a continuum where the past intersects with the present, different materials converge, and diverse perspectives come together. The central role of art in passing down important cultural knowledge is celebrated in this display through the diverse approaches that artists take to maintaining and regenerating customary cultural practices and iconography while also creating new forms of expression.
The works included in this inaugural hang are by emerging artists as well as senior figures across both time and place. Each of these artists has in their own way been at the forefront in creating new forms of expression, and in maintaining and regenerating customary cultural practices and iconography. Great individual artists, working in Aboriginal-owned art centres or independently after studying at art school, continue to shape and transform art in Australia, inspiring many others to follow their example.

Wurrdha Marra at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia

Embrace the interconnectivity of everything with Memo Akten&#8217;s multi-screen work exploring the merging of human and non-human consciousness – via the coded AI musings of octopus-like digital beings.
Originally beginning as an NFT collection on the ecologically friendly blockchain Tezos, Memo Akten&#8217;s eight-channel video installation, Distributed Consciousness, features 256 unique images of octopus-like Tentacular Critters created with custom Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning coded by the artist.
It was later revealed that each image had AI-generated text cryptographically encoded in it – a Verse. Invisible to the human eye, but readable by code, the collection forms a poem, a book, a manifesto. The manifesto is a human-machine co-creation meditation spanning consciousness, free will, life, death, art, technology, ritual, ecology, economy and sustainability. Each Verse was released as an audio-visual reading.
Cephalopods are incredibly intelligent; only 10% of their neurons are in a central brain, while the rest is distributed across their body, with two thirds in their arms. In a sense, they have a decentralised nervous system. Distributed Consciousness draws parallels between the distributed computation performed by smart-contract based blockchains, and the anthropological timeline, with differently evolved mythologies and deities, promoting alternative cultural values to the exploitative, extractivist, purely profit-driven neoliberal world we find ourselves in today.
Staged as a place of worship, our Tentacular deities invite us to face our final Copernican Trauma, to face the reality that humans may not be the sole keepers of what we think of as “intelligence”, “creativity” or even “consciousness”. The project also uses the extraordinary alien intelligence of cephalopods, to reflect on the new synthetic alien intelligences we are building in machines in the form of AI.
In these times of ecological collapse and urgency, we are invited to let go of the dangerous dichotomy of “Man vs Nature”, and instead embrace the interconnectedness of all human, non-human, living and non-living things across manifold scales of time and space, and actively work towards multi-species flourishing.

Memo Akten: Distributed Consciousness at ACMI

Nina Sanadze surveys the work of Melbourne-based contemporary artist Nina Sanadze. With a practice combining installation, sculpture and found objects, Sanadze references public statues, structures and monuments as metaphors for societal transformation, sometimes incorporating physical fragments and traces of public sculpture into her work.
The exhibition presents six sculpture and installation-based works which interrogate the meaning that statues carry, and the ways they reflect the values and priorities of the time and place in which they are erected or removed.
Inspired by the public monuments in her childhood home of Tbilisi, Georgia, where Soviet icons replaced imperial statues, Sanadze’s work reveals that our cities, monuments and public artworks are constantly in flux, reflecting their contemporary moment.
The works on display reference Australia’s colonial monuments in order to explore and question the emotional resonance of public art. In the installation Monuments and movements, the artist references Melbourne-based sculptures, including the Queen Victoria (1819–1901), Edward VII (1841–1910) and King George V (1865–1936) monuments in Melbourne. Replicating these monuments as flat, folding silhouettes on wheels, this installation presents these sculptures in state of flux between being assembled or dismantled, drawing attention to ideas of permanency and the ephemeral.
In Apotheosis 2021, a collage of sculptural fragments, Sanadze has used collected remnants of Soviet sculptor Valentin Topuridze (1907-1980), Sanadze’s family friend and childhood neighbour. Gifted from the family of the sculptor, Sanadze has reconstructed elements of Topuridze’s archive, piled into a large-scale installation which question complex historical legacies.
Bollard city 2018 examines the use of bollards and barriers, and related concepts of public safety, personal freedom and trust in the community. The work includes oversized bollards appearing to be made of heavy concrete, but are actually composed of lightweight cardboard and polystyrene, offering a sense of transience to these often-permanent structures.
Sanadze has held international solo presentations at Kunstall 3,14, Norway (2023), the 3rd Tbilisi Triennial, Georgia (2018), and she has staged various public art projects including the public art event, Returning the Names, together with Memorial Italia, held at the Venice Biennale, Italy (2022). Sanadze has also participated in group exhibitions at the La Trobe Art Institute, MADA gallery, Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Living Museum of the West, ACE Open, Institute of Modern Art, 101 Collins and Gertrude Glasshouse, George Paton Gallery, and Buxton Contemporary Public Screen.

Nina Sanadze at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia

The Country Road + NGV First Nations Commissions is a national, biennial mentorship and exhibition program that pairs emerging Australian First Nations artists and designers with one of eight esteemed industry mentors. Working collaboratively, the mentors each support and guide an emerging artist to create their most ambitious work to date.
Responding to this year’s exhibition theme of My Country, these new works are displayed in a major exhibition at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

My Country: Country Road + NGV First Nations Commissions

Freedom, heartache and exploitation – what does the road on screen tell us about the Australian Identity?
The road movie is central to Australian cinema. Whether it’s the Ford Falcon hooning down the highway in <a href="https://www.acmi.net.au/works/79359--mad-max/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mad Max</a> or hoofs pounding the highlands in <a href="https://cinema3.acmi.net.au/film/the-man-from-snowy-river/?_ga=2.81499540.2035557348.1720409480-1379877574.1708906249&amp;_gac=1.60425951.1719972406.CjwKCAjwyo60BhBiEiwAHmVLJRu5Eczkxw-5vPluL6vDBnSyzNP11R8kH1kIICNFYZ5IrXgfxOmBfBoCp4MQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Man from Snowy River</a>, traversing the country reflects a sense of adventure and national advancement.
But beneath the roads connecting the country are Indigenous walking paths and trading routes, from the Omeo Highway to the Bicentennial and Birdsville tracks, that have existed long before cities or cinema. These passages were often exploited to transport natural resources, connect infrastructure and progress colonialism. Historical accounts often reframe them as stockmen or cattle routes, denying First Peoples knowledges and legacy.
The Australian road movie has had a similar effect on our cultural consciousness, symbolising freedom and control over a perceived harsh land. It has become a cinematic trope and cultural export, a celebration of progress that excludes First Peoples relationship to these vital navigational networks.
Beneath Roads is a three-channel work that reveals the Indigenous experience and innovation underlying our national identity. By juxtaposing archival government films, iconic Australian road movies and newly captured footage of the Aboriginal motorcycle club, The Southern Warriors, Beneath Roads reinserts First Peoples knowledge legacies and representation into our cinematic canon, recontextualising our relationship to history, culture and Country.

Koorie Heritage Trust is proud to present Let’s Shake by internationally recognised artist and Palawa woman Karen Casey (1956–2021).
Presented for the first time at KHT, this installation of over 200 plaster casts is the tangible outcome of an ongoing series of public participatory events under the title Let’s Shake, led by Casey between 2006 – 2011. Casey described these gatherings as public art connection and communication events, during which participants of different cultural backgrounds and ages came together in a shared experience, holding wet plaster between their hands and making conversation until set and could be removed as a solid form, forever carrying the unique marks of the two individuals and the energy of their encounter.
Let’s Shake has been exhibited as a number of unique installations, including under the name Contact/Converse at the National Gallery of Victoria, Narrm (2008); Oaxaca, Mexico (2011); Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, Aotearoa (2011); in the group exhibition All of Us, Blindside, Narrm (2018); and in the Lorne Sculpture Biennale, Victoria (2022).
Koorie Heritage Trust also acknowledge the very generous gift of this artwork to the KHT’s important collection of South-East Australian art and cultural belongings by Casey’s son Daniel Young, in memory of his mother.

Karen Casey: Let's Shake at KHT

Spirit of the Animals draws on the Koorie Heritage Trust’s extensive collection of artworks and cultural belongings to highlight the significance of animals in the cultural life of Victorian First Peoples, establishing connection to Place and Country, and strengthening clan and cultural identity. Mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, vertebrates, invertebrates, insects, and more, are depicted in the exhibition through paintings, animation, drawings, sculpture, tools and adornment.
